つまり、“the original plant is not altered by the new sap; it is only made stronger and able to bear finer flowers” (ii)という比喩にも示されているように、西洋文学がこれからの日本文学に滋養を注ぎ込むということである。 そして、ハーンは講義を終えるに当たって、学生たちに将来に向けてどうあるべきかを以下のように語っている: “Therefore I should certainly venture to hope that there yet may be a Japanese Walter Scott, whose learning will not prevent him from sympathizing with the unlearned.”(iv) 学識があっても無学の人たちに共感することのできる「日本のウォルター・スコット」(a Japanese Walter Scott)になるという表現は、ハーンのバラッドに対する関心の深さを如実に表すものである。

ハーンは東京大学での英文学史の講義の中で、スコットとバラッドの関係について次のように説明している: “Minstrelsy (Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border) of course signifies the songs or compositions of the minstrels, or wandering musicians, as well as the whole art of popular song which these represented.  The collection ― consisting of all the popular songs and ballads that Sir Walter Scott had been able to collect along the border-land between England and Scotland―was very well named.  And it remains the most valuable book of its kind, and the most successful after Percy.  Even the great modern collection edited by the late Professor Child would be a very poor collection indeed if we were to take out of it these pieces originally collected by Sir Walter Scott.  The border-land between England and Scotland, as you may well suppose, teemed with traditions and songs of the old wars between the two countries; and it was chiefly through the impression obtained from this popular literature that Scott subsequently found inspiration, not only for his poetical, but his prose romances.”(v) ハーンはスコットのMinstrelsy of Scottish Border (1802-03)だけではなく、ここで言及されるThomas Percy (1729-1811)のReliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765)とFrancis James Child (1825-1896)のEnglish and Scottish Ballads (1860)も所有していた。 そして、ハーンが弟子の大谷正信に宛てた1897年12月付書簡の中の、“there is more value in the English ballad of ‘Chide Waters’ or of ‘Tamlane’ than in the whole of the verse of Pope.”(viii) という一節は、Alexander Pope (1688-1744)を代表とする古典主義に対する反動として展開される、スコットを代表とするロマン主義運動の延長線上にハーン自身も位置することを端的に示している。

ハーンは終始一貫、「一般民衆の日常の生活の中に入り、彼らの思想で考える」 (taking part in the daily existence of the common people, and thinking with their thoughts)(ix) [1889年11月28日付W. 一例を挙げれば、中国起源の物語とされる『怪談』(Kwaidan, 1904)所収の「安芸乃介の夢」(“The Dream of Akinosuké”)は、その序文に “Some of the stories may have had a Chinese origin: the very remarkable ‘Dream of Akinosuké’, for example, is certainly from a Chinese source.  But the Japanese story-teller, in every case, has so recolored and reshaped his borrowing as to naturalize it….”(xi)
