(1)In my infant and boyish days too, I owed much to an old Maid of my Mother's, remarkable for her ignorance, credulity and superstition. --She had, I suppose, the largest collection in the country of tales and songs concerning devils, ghosts, fairies, brownies, witches, warlocks, spunkies, kelpies, elf-candles, dead-lights, wraiths, apparitions, cantraips, giants, inchanted towers, dragons and other trumpery. --This cultivated the latent seeds of Poesy; but had so strong an effect on my imagination,….(To Dr. Moore, 2nd August 1787) (J. De Lancey Ferguson and G. Ross Roy, eds., The Letters of Robert Burns, vol. I, 1780-1789 (Oxford, 1985, p. 135))
(2) ‘ It’s some time since I heard that sung, but there’s no good beating about the bush: it’s true. The People of the Hills have all left. I saw them come into Old England and I saw them go. Giants, trolls, kelpies, brownies, goblins, imps; wood, tree, mound, and water-spirits; heath-people, hill-watchers, treasure-guards, good people, little people, pishogues, leprechauns, night-riders, pixies, gnomes, and the rest―gone, all gone! I came into England with Oak, Ash, and Thorn, and when Oak, Ash, and Thorn are gone I shall go too.’ (Puck’s words from Weland’s Sword Puck of Pook’s Hill Rudyard Kipling 1906)    (Underlines mine)

The People of the Hill 「丘に住む人々」と言い、人間と変らぬ人間と共生する事物ととらえている点が面白い。

By oake and ashe and thorne(第18連)

歌詞はすべてキプリングのもので、Puck of Pook’s Hillとその続編Rewards and Fairiesからである。Argo ZFB 11。 The Barrack-Room Ballads of Rudyard Kiplingというアルバムで、こちらはFree Reedのレコードである。
