本協会のリンク集「10 英語圏以外のバラッド (12) Finnish」に、以下の記述がある（この項の筆者は櫻井）。

Child #13: “Edward” のフィンランド版（“Velisurmaaja” [“The Fratricide”]）の独語訳 “Der Blutige Sohn” がある(2nd ed., p. 151)。チャイルドは English and Scottish Ballads, vol. 2 (1860, pp. 347-352)にデンマーク版(“The Youth of the Rosengord”)とフィンランド版の英語訳(“The Blood-Stained Son”)を載せている。Algernon Charles Swinburne にも訳詩がある（“The Bloody Son” in Poems and Songs）。
山中光義氏は『バラッド詩学』（2009）の中で、スウィンバーンの “The Bloody Son” を literary ballad の例として論じている（pp. 23-24）。Natascha Würzbach も “Tradition and Innovation: The Influence of Child Ballads on the Anglo-American Literary Ballad” と題する論文で約１ページにわたって取り上げて “’The Bloody Son’ is more a tour de force in ballad imitation.” と言う (Joseph Harris, ed., The Ballad and Oral Literature, Harvard UP, 1991, pp. 175-76)。上記の「訳詞」というコメントは他人からの受け売りであったので、スウィンバーン版とフィンランド版との関係をもう少し調べてみた。
この詩の初出である1862年発行の Once a Week, vol. 6 (Feb. 15, 1862, pp. 215-16) を参照すると、表題は “The Bloody Son” ではなくて、”The Fratricide” とされていて表題のすぐ下に少し小さな活字で (FINNISH.) と書き添えられていた。フィンランド版の原題あるいは出典等はまったく付いていない。そして彼の他の詩集Poems and Ballads (London: 1866, pp. 329-33); Laus Veneris, And Other Poems and Ballads (London & New York: 1867, pp. 315-18) で題は THE BLOODY SON と変えられたが、(FINNISH.) の文言をそのまま付けたままで転載された（本文では、引用符が加えられて、“A twiggin rod” → “A twiggin school-rod” の変更あり）。これに対して、スウィンバーンの死後に編集されたBallads of the English Border By Algernon Charles Swinburne, ed. by William A. MacInnes (London: 1925) では、タイトルから Finnish の文言が削除されて “The Bloody Son” となり、Ancient Ballads; Imitative Ballads; Modern Ballads の3分類のうちの Modern Ballads に入れられた（pp. 220-23; また、本文ではさらに "my ae brither” → “my brither”; “water-head” → “waterhead” の変更あり）。巻末の出典の記録（p. 262）も、初出の題を “The Fratricide (Finnish)” ではなくて “The Fratricide” としているので、MacInnes編集版詩集からは「フィンランド版」との繋がりを汲み取ることができない。似たような扱いはスウィンバーンが Breton 版としていた “May Janet” (pp. 213-14) にも見られ、Breton の文言が削られているが、こちらには “the ballad has no connection whatever with ‘Breton’ folk-lore” (p. 252) という説明が付いている。
チャイルドによると、フィンランド版は “Werinen Pojka”（血染めの息子）または“Velisurmaaja”（兄弟殺し）であり（Child, ESPB, vol. 1, 1882, p. 168; s.v. Edward）、マザーウェルも Minstrelsy, Ancient and Modern (Glasgow: 1827, p. lxvii) 収録の “Why Dois Zour Brand Sae Drap wi’ Bluid?” (= “Edward”) への注で “Werinen Pojka, The bloody Son, a very counterpart of the Scottish ballad” とフィンランド版に言及している。
フィンランド版は H.R. von Schröter, Finnische Runen: Finnisch und Deutsch (Upsala, 1819) に “Werinen poika”/”Der blutige Sohn” としてドイツ語との対訳で掲載され（pp. 124-29）、また第2版（Stuttgart und Tübingen, 1834, pp. 150-55）にも若干の修正を加えて再録された。Finnische Runen (1819) を元にした “Runes of Finland” という記事がThe Westminster Review, vol. 7 (1827) に載り、ここに “Werinen Pojka (The Bloody Son)” 全文の英語訳も含まれている（pp. 337-39；なお、他所では “Verinen Poika” という表記もある）。また、同じ出典から採られたチャイルドの英語訳 “The Blood-Stained Son” は、1857年版のEnglish and Scottish Ballads, vol. 2 (pp. 350-52；1860年版とはページが異なっている）に掲載されたが、“A translation, nearly word for word, of Der Blutige Sohn, printed from oral tradition in Schröter's Finnische Runen, (Finnisch und Deutsch,) ed. 1834, p. 151.” と言うように、ドイツ語訳のほうからの重訳である。Finnische Runen
版を含めて主なフィンランド版5編の全文が、Archer Taylor の記念碑的な研究である "Edward" and "Sven I Rosengård": A Study in the Dissemination of a Ballad (Chicago, 1931, pp. 59-65) に原語と英語の直訳を付して収録されている。 “Velisurmaaja” と題するヴァージョンはリョンロット（Elias Lönnrot）編の歌謡集『カンテレタル(Kanteletar)』（1840）に収録されたので、フィンランドではよく知られていて、インターネット上の多くのサイトに載っている(1)。また、このバラッドを題材にした Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) の絵画（1897）(2) があり、この絵は郵便切手にもなった。シベリウスはピアノ作品集「６つのフィンランド民謡」（1905）の第5曲に「兄弟殺し（Velisurmaaja）」を取り入れた(3)。アメリカでのフィールド録音もある(4)。
しかし、スウィンバーン版をフィンランド版と比べてみると、物語の大筋は似ているものの、スタンザの構成は異なっているし、語句・表現も相違が大きい。その理由は、スウィンバーン版はフィンランド版から直接訳されたものではなくチャイルドの英語訳を元にして作り変えられたからだと思われる。London Review (4 August 1866, xiii, 130-1) に載った Swinburne の Poems and Ballads に対する無署名の書評に、“Indeed, the ballad of ‘The Bloody Son,’ though here derived from the Finnish, bears a close resemblance to the old Scotch song, ‘Edward! Edward!’” と書かれていて、これが再録されている Clyde K. Hyder, ed., Algernon Swinburne: The Critical Heritage (London: 1970, 1996) で編者は “’The Bloody Son’ is really a paraphrase of a Finnish ballad of which Swinburne found an English translation of a German translation in F. J. Child's early collection English and Scottish Ballads (1857), ii, 350-2” (p. 38) との注を付けているし、Anne Henry Ehrenpreis も “Swinburne's Edition of Popular Ballads” (PMLA, vol. 78, no. 5, Dec. 1963) と題する論文で、“The Fratricide” は “a stanza-by-stanza recension of a Finnish version of the ballad ‘Edward’ which he found in Child's second volume.” (p. 564) と言う。
以上の結果をまとめると、「フィンランド版（“Werinen Pojka”/“Velisurmaaja”） → ドイツ語訳（“Der Blutige Sohn,” 1819） → チャイルドの英語訳（“The Blood-Stained Son,” 1857） → スウィンバーン版（“The Fratricide”/“The Bloody Son,” 1862）」との流れになり、しかもスウィンバーン版は「訳詞」とは言い難く、スウィンバーンが付加した “Finnish” なる文言は「フィンランド版を下敷きにしての書き換え」あるいは「フィンランド版（英語訳）の改作」と読み取るのが正確であろう。そこで、「リンク集」のSchröter. Finnische Runen への注記は、他の誤りも含めて以下のように訂正する。
